Youth for Renewable Energy

Project Overview

This initiative aims to engage Ugandan youth (aged 18–35) by providing them with skills and opportunities in the renewable energy sector, focusing on solar energy and its productive uses

Background

Uganda has one of the youngest populations globally, with over 70% under the age of 34. Despite this youthful demographic, youth unemployment remains a significant challenge. As of 2024, the overall unemployment rate stood at 12.3%, with youth unemployment being notably higher.

Concurrently, access to grid electricity is limited, with only about 25% of the population connected to the grid as of 2023. This energy deficit hampers economic growth, education, and healthcare services.

Uganda possesses significant untapped renewable energy resources, particularly solar energy, with an average solar radiation of 5.1 kWh/m²/day. Harnessing this potential can address electricity poverty and create employment opportunities for the youth.

Objectives

Train 300 youths in solar energy installation, maintenance, and entrepreneurship.

Support 20 youth-led renewable energy enterprises.

Support community-based projects utilising solar energy for productive uses such as agro-processing and small-scale manufacturing.
